CNN —It feels weird to begin a complimentary piece about Anne Hathaway by saying I didn’t especially enjoy her latest movie, but here goes. Yet, as she recently explained to the New York Times, she’s spent far too much of her life trying to make other people happy. Even now, a Google search for “hate Anne Hathaway” produces more than five million hits. The movie is set years after that betrayal, and Solène, like Hathaway, has outgrown her habit of people pleasing. Hathaway is so luminously beautiful in “The Idea of You” that, for me at least, it undermines the entire film.

CNN —Friday’s midnight release of “The Tortured Poets Department,” Taylor Swift’s 11th album, means that yet another era has begun — and a record-breaking one at that. I am one of them, and the anticipation — along with the revelry — has been an extended family affair. Swifties dug into Taylor math, which often revolves around the number 13, the date of her December birthday. Check out the erratic capitalization of track 24, “Thank you Aimee” if you doubt that Swift is masterminding it all. Maybe wherever they land, there is a seminar on Taylor Swift.

MILAN (AP) — Prada brought nature indoors as a backdrop for its 2024-25 fall and winter menswear collection meant to get humans outside. The new Prada collection, unveiled on the third day of Milan Fashion Week menswear previews Sunday, marked “the return of the seasons,’’ as a point of renewal of the spirit, co-creative director Miuccia Prada said backstage. Without falling into strict categories of office wear and outdoor wear, Prada said that the collection “was meant for going outside,” and spending time there, not just as a point of transit. Raf Simons, Prada’s co-creative director, said the collection referenced water in its many forms: the sea, rain, a stream, ice. Always political, the Prada collection references climate change, but without being explicit.

Each and every day, journalists covering the Middle East conflict are faced with thorny challenges, many of which they must grapple with in real-time. We spoke with CNN’s Jake Tapper on Tuesday for a wide-ranging interview about reporting on the war. I generally feel that we in the news media writ large, all over the world, censor too much. It’s nothing compared to what the people in Israel and Gaza and the West Bank are currently going through. More than 50 journalists have now died in the region since the onset of the war, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists.

A new documentary “Uncharitable,” from “Paris Trout” and “Losing Isaiah” director Stephen Gyllenhaal, wants to change that. For almost twenty years, researchers and nonprofits have warned about the negative consequences of starving nonprofits of general operating expenses, also known as overhead. In part by emphasizing efficiency, those donors continue to pressure nonprofits to decrease their standing costs, using a slightly different vocabulary. Similarly, more donors understand the value of granting unearmarked funds, which allow nonprofits to change plans or simply to invest in their staff or improve their infrastructure or technology. ___Associated Press coverage of philanthropy and nonprofits receives support through the AP’s collaboration with The Conversation US, with funding from Lilly Endowment Inc.

Like movie theaters across the country that are facing the fallout of an actors’ strike and the shift to streaming, the Oriental Theater in Milwaukee was quite pleased to have Taylor Swift’s concert film coming to its screens. But “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour,” which has been a box office rainmaker, comes with an unconventional stipulation: Theaters may only show it Thursdays through Sundays, said Cara Ogburn, the artistic director of Milwaukee Film, which runs the Oriental Theater. So what to do, she wondered, on the other three days of the week? “What if we show all Jake Gyllenhaal movies,” Ogburn suggested offhandedly, initially as a joke. The team’s resident Swiftie assured leadership that the theater would not be canceled for a lineup based on the pop star’s famous exes.

REUTERS/Mario Anzuoni/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsLOS ANGELES, Oct 17 (Reuters) - Santa Claus will not be coming to Hollywood this year. The strike, which has entered its 14th week, is scrambling next year’s film slate and delaying the return of primetime television comedies and dramas. Some have sold rights to film and television libraries to keep the lights on, one buyer told Reuters. Some major studio films scheduled for next year could slip into 2025 if the work stoppage continues, according to the studio executive, raising concern that audiences will get out of the habit of going to theaters.

Sometimes they told me about a lie they told an interviewer because they were scared or trying to misdirect the journalist. CNN —Stanley Tucci weighed in on the debate about straight actors portraying gay characters in a new interview with BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs on Saturday. Tucci, who is married to literary agent Felicity Blunt, said he believes that as an actor, “you’re supposed to play different people.”“You just are. Tucci has portrayed gay characters in 2006’s “The Devil Wears Prada” and in the 2020 film “Supernova” alongside Oscar-winner Colin Firth. “Because often, it’s not done the right way.”For decades, Hollywood has cast actors in heterosexual relationships for gay roles. Conversations around inclusivity in casting transgender actors in transgender roles have also become pertinent, and casting cisgender actors for those roles has recently fallen out of popular practice.

He said it sold for $65 million after sites including TikTok "failed" to help creators make money. The 22-year-old certainly doesn't need to live with his folks: He became a millionaire last year after his company, Fanfix, sold for $65 million, according to Crunchbase. When SuperOrdinary bought Fanfix, Insider's Geoff Weiss reported that there were plans for product collaborations with the platform's creators. “I am the teacher that’s under investigation with the Florida Department of Education for indoctrination for showing a Disney movie,” Barbee said in a TikTok post over the weekend. In the post, Barbee explained she played the Disney movie to a class which was partially full after a day of standardized testing. Jordan also provided CNN with a copy of the announcement from the school district to parents. “Yesterday, the Disney movie ‘Strange World’ was shown in your child’s classroom,” the school district said. CNN has reached out to Rodriguez and Hernando County School District and the Florida Department of Education for comment.

The Met Gala, which will be held next week, serves as the unofficial birthday party for Vogue magazine. The outfits at Time’s 100 Most Influential People in the World gala, held last night at Jazz at Lincoln Center, generally don’t involve as much forethought, but it is nevertheless an opulent affair. Tiffany Haddish wore a red and black sequined gown and Natasha Lyonne was in a black Area dress with a bedazzled oyster bodice. The storied masquerade party and annual gala dinner raises money to preserve the artworks of the flood-threatened Italian city. The event raised $1.2 million and transformed the Plaza into an arms-in-the-air dance party with the D.J.
Dar Salim and Jake Gyllenhaal Photo: Metro Goldwyn Mayer PicturesThe possessive title is an odd choice for “ Guy Ritchie ’s The Covenant.” Mr. Ritchie made a name for himself in his native Britain directing kinetic and funny gangster comedies infused with hip comic dialogue and an ironic streak, notably “Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels” and “Snatch,” then carried that spirit with him to Hollywood in such efforts as the two Sherlock Holmes movies starring Robert Downey Jr. Yet his latest offering, an Afghanistan war yarn, is such a straightforward action drama that it could have been made by Clint Eastwood . Only the jokey homoerotic banter stamps it as typical of Mr. Ritchie’s work. Jake Gyllenhaal stars as John Kinley, a supremely competent master sergeant in 2018 Afghanistan tasked with finding and destroying Taliban bomb factories dotted around the country. He goes on a mission with a new local interpreter he doesn’t fully trust, Ahmed (Dar Salim), who despises the Taliban for killing his son and is further tempted by the prospect of earning a special visa to immigrate to the U.S. in exchange for satisfactory service.

Tracy Anderson charges members $900 a month to workout at her studios in LA and New York. Her former trainers said teaching in the 95-degree studios for at least four hours a day could be grueling.
